Silver nitrate sticks are small sticks containing silver nitrate powder (AgNO3). Such sticks are used in medicine to remove warts and other skin growths. They are also used in industry for sealing glass vessels and the production of mirrors.

Composition of silver nitrate sticks

Silver nitrate sticks consist of 75% silver nitrate powder and 25% potassium nitrate. Silver nitrate acts as a caustic chemical agent, while potassium nitrate increases the speed of reaction of silver nitrate with tissues.

Uses of silver nitrate sticks

Silver nitrate sticks are used in medicine to remove warts and other skin growths. This is done by applying the agarwood to the affected area and leaving it for a few seconds. This causes a layer of silver to form on the affected area, which leads to cell death in that area.

Silver nitrate sticks are also used in industry for sealing glass vessels and for the production of mirrors. This is done by applying oud to the edge of a glass or mirror, creating a layer of silver on the edge.

Safety precautions when using silver nitrate sticks

Silver nitrate sticks are a caustic substance that can cause skin and eye irritation. Therefore, safety precautions should be taken when using them, including:

• Wear medical gloves and goggles.
• Avoid contact of silver nitrate sticks with skin and eyes.
• In case of contact of silver nitrate sticks with the skin, the affected area should be washed with soap and water.
• In case of contact of silver nitrate sticks with the eyes, the eyes should be rinsed with water for at least 15 minutes.
